Roy Jones Cup 2016

Congratulations to Chris Carter who was presented with the Cup he won last May at Carsington. On a very blustery day Chris won with 7 fish to his rod.

The 2016 trophy was fished for last Saturday 14th May at Stocks reservoir in the Trough of Boland. On an absolutely beautiful day 8 members fished for the Cup. Winning boat was boat 15 with 7 fish. Everybody caught fish which was pleasing. Some cold mornings had possibly put the fish down, because record bags were caught by members who were practising on Tuesday / Wednesday.

The winner of this year’s trophy was David Hild with 4 fish, followed by Dudley Hosfield with 3 fish – all these fish were taken in the afternoon. Chris Carter got 2 fish along with Brian Greengrass. Jim O’Brien, Simon Dowling and Chris Shepherd all caught.

The biggest fish of the day was a tremendous Brown Trout over 6lb for Mel Woods, winning him a bottle of the amber nectar.

It had been quite a week for Mel on his practice trip on Wednesday he got 24 fish including a massive rainbow of 12lb.

Regards,

Dudley

Toft Newton 19/03/16

The first outing of 2016 saw us at Toft Newton.
Eight of us were responsible for landing 28 trout for the day.
G Jones – 9 – With more from the bank
M Wood – 8 – Biggest fish
B Jones – 3
B Greengrass – 3
Peter Aldred – 3
D Hild – 2
Chris Carter & J O’Brien – 0
Very cold wind blowing most of the day made lunch time welcome. In the afternoon the wind dropped but the temp remained very low and a cold group enjoyed a bit of friendly banter after a good day out.

Stocks Reservoir – 5th September 2015

Our day out to Stocks was again a good day for the lads & lasses of the branch. Not many fish caught, but one boat outshone the rest by bringing four to the net and releasing two more at distance. A day of difficult fishing, blustery winds and accusations of cheating by the top boat!

The eight of us started a bit later than usual with me and Dave leaving the boat dock at about 10:15. I was up the sharp end today and Dave took us down to Gull Island where my trio of wets soon produced the first fish. It took a keen liking to the drogue and promptly did three laps around the ropes making me lose two flies, but I got the fish, number one. A long spell then came number two to a Sweet Suzie. This was just before 12:30 when we said we would return to the dock for lunch. But we decided as we had found the fish at last we would have ours on board. This is where the green monster of jealousy appeared and the subsequent committee meeting held without a defence, deemed the fish caught during the lunch break were not eligible for recording!
At this point I had two, and David had two to the net. I went on to lose 2 due to poor knots giving under the tremendous strain of a gargantuan rainbow of at least 2 lb. (60 years fishing and I still can’t tie a knot, maybe a lesson for buddy night?). Dave went on to miss a few more takes to his floating flies and 17:00 was upon us.

My favourite 5 weight Marksman Drifter rod didn’t even get a tug. I tried all the flies in my competition box to no effect on the other 7 weight I had also set up in desperation to catch! Floating and sinking lines didn’t find me a fish either. I think we only saw one fish caught on another boat all day. I don’t know why it was fishing so poorly when conditions looked pretty good? – Chris.

It was quite calm in the bays by late afternoon but there was hardly a fish to be seen all day, even with a good ripple and overcast sky.

When we returned to the dock we were met by some sad tired faces, only Judith had succeeded to catch.
That soon changed when the banter started and a good laugh was had by all, and we continued to laugh all the way to the local pub.
Yet another good day out for the branch members.

Toft Newton Fishery on 8th August

Hi All,

After a very successful trip to Ladybower, where David big fish Hild managed another big fish of 13.5 lbs, on a dry mayfly pattern. David is in the habit of catching big fish. He had a big Brown Trout on Rutland water last year. All caught fish right on or in the surface. Fantastic fishing and very visual.

The next boat fishing trip is to Toft Newton Fishery on 8th August. I have not fished the venue before but I believe from those that have that its a first class fishery. I would advise that you have a look at the website www.toftnewton.com

If you would like to fish, please let me know by email please before this coming Friday. If you have not boat fished before we always put the inexperienced with the experienced. Hope to see you all there.

Kind Regards.

Leeds FDG Programme October 2015/2016

2015 / 2016 Programme

We commence on Wednesday 7th October 2015 at West Park Rugby Club with our registration night where Jerry Lee will tie some flies. Go to the Contact page for directions.

Any  new members will be made most welcome and introduced to the club if they come along. There is a bite to eat in terms of a little supper on this night.

In terms of our guest speaker programme, we have invited four relatively local speakers this year out of the normal six, in response to feedback from members to have the following topics covered:-

  • Tenkara flies and Fishing – Phil Sheridan,
  • New material innovations and dying of materials on a small scale at home – Andy Kitchener
  • Local Salt water Fly Fishing and suitable flies – Clark Coleman
  • North Country Flies – Robert Smith

We have Rob Denson kicking us of on Wed. 14th October with reservoir and river trout flies. The last guest speaker is a double act from Nottingham with Bob Lomax and Wendy Gibson demonstrating innovative techniques.

This year the  Beginners and Improvers programmes include all the bronze and silver level flies for the national FDG accreditation awards. The Beginners Programme will be led by Jerry Lee and the Improvers by Melvyn Wood.

We have scheduled “Buddy” nights in the programme and on each of these nights specific flies will be tied by an instructor as well as individuals having the opportunity before hand to nominate an individual fly or technique that they want help with, demonstrating or coaching on.

The Roy Jones trophy match will be at Stocks Reservoir next year on 7th May 2016.

We are going to have 3 classes of fly tying competitions  next year – the Apprentice Cup for “Beginners”, a new trophy for “Improvers “ and the Herbert Harris Cup for the new Advanced tiers group.

The trio of Flies for these awards will be selected from the Bronze, Silver and Gold patterns and need to be handed in by the end Feb 2016. Generally anybody can enter any class providing they have not previously won it.

The full programme is available to download below or take a look at the Events section. In addition to tying nights, Events will contain details of our fishing trips and competitions that are organised throughout the year.

Fly Dressers Guild Team Competition Winners!

It was the FDG team comp, and four of us from the fly fishing forum got a team together – Me, Richard, Wynne and Dave.
All from different parts of the country and all FDG members of course.
The idea was brought up by Richard and the team name ‘The Forumites’ was my idea, (not very inventive).
We had to tie three flies each mine was the Coachman, and send them as a team effort to FDG HQ (details in Autumn fly dresser mag).
This we did, but it was a close thing to get them there in time as Dave’s dad was taken ill and shortly after sadly died, but he came up with the flies just in time.
We all received a trophy and certificate, and also a goody bag from Veniards with lots of good useful items.
Details of the comp will be in the next mag, but here are the pics of the trophy and cert.

Best regards,

Jim O’Brien
