Leeds Fly Dressers Guild – New Season 2018-2019

REMINDER: We are having our Registration Night at 7:30pm on Wednesday 3rd October 2018 at West Park Rugby Club, The Sycamores, Bramhope, LS16 9JR. The new season’s programme is attached below.

Jerry Lee will be using Peter Gathercole’s Fly Tying Bible as the reference and each fly in the programme is referenced in this book.  Jerry proposes to discuss and show variants upon each pattern.  There is space in the programme for 6 guest speaker nights which usually include a buffet and raffle during the break. We also hold buddy nights to deal with individual requests for help with your tying. We are uncertain how many complete beginners we might have joining us so it is proposed that we plan and deliver a beginners programme as necessary.

Our first Guest Speaker is the top notch angler and author Jeremy Lucas who will be well known to many of you.  Jeremy has represented England in international competitions in all disciplines of fly fishing and written a number of excellent books. He will be joining us on Wednesday 10th October.

Other speakers we have invited are:

  • Frank Moors
  • Phillipa Hake
  • Rob Denson
  • Jon Grey
  • AGM Speaker – TBC

The programme will include all the bronze and silver level flies for the national FDG accreditation awards and will be led by Jerry Lee and Melvyn Wood. There are 3 buddy style nights built in for those wishing to follow either the FDG bronze or silver award syllabi.

We are going to have 3 classes of fly tying competitions – the Apprentice Cup for “Novice”, a new trophy for “Improvers“ and the Herbert Harris Cup for the “Advanced” tiers group.

The trio of Flies for these awards will be selected from the Bronze, Silver and Gold patterns and need to be handed in by the end Feb 2019. Generally, anybody can enter any class providing they have not previously won it.

The full programme is available to download below or take a look at the Events section. In addition to tying nights, Events will contain details of our fishing trips and competitions that are organised throughout the year.

Roy Jones Cup 2016

Roy Jones Trophy 2016

Congratulations to Chris Carter who was presented with the Cup he won last May at Carsington. On a very blustery day Chris won with 7 fish to his rod.

The 2016 trophy was fished for last Saturday 14th May at Stocks reservoir in the Trough of Boland. On an absolutely beautiful day 8 members fished for the Cup. Winning boat was boat 15 with 7 fish. Everybody caught fish which was pleasing. Some cold mornings had possibly put the fish down, because record bags were caught by members who were practising on Tuesday / Wednesday.

The winner of this year’s trophy was David Hild with 4 fish, followed by Dudley Hosfield with 3 fish – all these fish were taken in the afternoon. Chris Carter got 2 fish along with Brian Greengrass. Jim O’Brien, Simon Dowling and Chris Shepherd all caught.

The biggest fish of the day was a tremendous Brown Trout over 6lb for Mel Woods, winning him a bottle of the amber nectar.

It had been quite a week for Mel on his practice trip on Wednesday he got 24 fish including a massive rainbow of 12lb.

Toft Newton 19/03/16

mel

The first outing of 2016 saw us at Toft Newton.
Eight of us were responsible for landing 28 trout for the day.
G Jones – 9 – With more from the bank
M Wood – 8 – Biggest fish
B Jones – 3
B Greengrass – 3
Peter Aldred – 3
D Hild – 2
Chris Carter & J O’Brien – 0
Very cold wind blowing most of the day made lunch time welcome. In the afternoon the wind dropped but the temp remained very low and a cold group enjoyed a bit of friendly banter after a good day out.

Any  new members will be made most welcome and introduced to the club if they come along. There is a bite to eat in terms of a little supper on this night.

In terms of our guest speaker programme, we have invited four relatively local speakers this year out of the normal six, in response to feedback from members to have the following topics covered:-

  • Tenkara flies and Fishing – Phil Sheridan,
  • New material innovations and dying of materials on a small scale at home – Andy Kitchener

  • North Country Flies – Robert Smith

We have Rob Denson kicking us of on Wed. 14th October with reservoir and river trout flies. The last guest speaker is a double act from Nottingham with Bob Lomax and Wendy Gibson demonstrating innovative techniques.

Leeds FDG Subscriptions

For a number of years now it has not been necessary to increase the Leeds branch subscriptions. The Committee reluctantly find it necessary to increase the subs to the following levels from October 2015

  1. i) Guest Speaker night fees will be increased from £5 to £8 for Leeds branch members and £10 for any  guests they wish to invite.
  2. ii) Annual Branch subs will increase from £5 to £10.

iii) Regular Tying night fees will stay the same at £3.

The main reason for this is to build up money to replace the IT equipment that we use, currently this is not depreciated in our accounts and will need replacing shortly. However in seeking to address this issue we have made decisions to be:

  1. Less reliant on raffles
  2. Be less at the mercy of bad weather and low numbers of attendance.
  3. We must as a minimum breakeven, on Guest Speaker nights and cannot loose money on any of these evenings,  as we have done so on some of them in the past.
  4. We have tried to reward the people who attend regularly by keeping the tying night fees the same.

Programme 2014

The first night is Wednesday 24th September 2014. This is for registration followed by Jerry Lee demonstrating mayflies and competition flies, starting at 7.30pm (our usual time) at West Park Rugby Club, Bramhope. It’s easy to find, on The Sycamores just off the roundabout on the A660 Leeds to Otley Road. See the Contact page for a map.

Our guest speakers this season are Paul Procter, Stuart Crofts, Pat Stevens, Paul Davidson, Phil Holding and David Southall.
Paul Procter is kicking off the guest nights on 1st October 2014 and he is always a very entertaining speaker so come along and bring a friend!
