Leeds Fly Dressers Guild – 2019 Programme

We are having our Registration Night at 7:30pm on Wednesday 2nd October 2019 at West Park Rugby Club, The Sycamores, Bramhope, LS16 9JR.

We have put two programmes together for the members this year: The beginners programme and the improvers programme, and both are very comprehensive.

We also have six very experienced celebrity fly tyers coming along to give a talk and inspire us all on the first Wednesday of each month. This year we have Paul ProcterDave HudsonAimeé Kitching, Stuart Croft, Dave Southall and last but by no means least, Matt Eastham.

This year the beginners group will all be loaned a vice, tools and all the materials needed to tie the flies in the programme. This will give all the beginners the chance to initially sample fly tying without it actually costing them anything.

If you would like to join us on Wednesday 2nd October, you would be made very welcome.

Leeds Fly Dressers Guild – New Season 2018-2019

REMINDER: We are having our Registration Night at 7:30pm on Wednesday 3rd October 2018 at West Park Rugby Club, The Sycamores, Bramhope, LS16 9JR. The new season’s programme is attached below.

Jerry Lee will be using Peter Gathercole’s Fly Tying Bible as the reference and each fly in the programme is referenced in this book.  Jerry proposes to discuss and show variants upon each pattern.  There is space in the programme for 6 guest speaker nights which usually include a buffet and raffle during the break. We also hold buddy nights to deal with individual requests for help with your tying. We are uncertain how many complete beginners we might have joining us so it is proposed that we plan and deliver a beginners programme as necessary.

Our first Guest Speaker is the top notch angler and author Jeremy Lucas who will be well known to many of you.  Jeremy has represented England in international competitions in all disciplines of fly fishing and written a number of excellent books. He will be joining us on Wednesday 10th October.

Other speakers we have invited are:

  • Frank Moors
  • Phillipa Hake
  • Rob Denson
  • Jon Grey
  • AGM Speaker – TBC

The programme will include all the bronze and silver level flies for the national FDG accreditation awards and will be led by Jerry Lee and Melvyn Wood. There are 3 buddy style nights built in for those wishing to follow either the FDG bronze or silver award syllabi.

We are going to have 3 classes of fly tying competitions – the Apprentice Cup for “Novice”, a new trophy for “Improvers“ and the Herbert Harris Cup for the “Advanced” tiers group.

The trio of Flies for these awards will be selected from the Bronze, Silver and Gold patterns and need to be handed in by the end Feb 2019. Generally, anybody can enter any class providing they have not previously won it.

The full programme is available to download below or take a look at the Events section. In addition to tying nights, Events will contain details of our fishing trips and competitions that are organised throughout the year.

Fly Fest 2015 – Penrith

Dear All,

While we were tying at the CLA Game Fair @ Harewood House this year we were approached by Davy Newall to do a similar thing at Fly Fest this year. David Hild and Jim O’Brien will be on the FDG stand helping. The Fly Fest will be held on the 3rd & 4th of October at the Rheged Discovery Centre on the A66 just off the M6 at Jnc. 40 (Penrith).

Regards, Dudley.

Fly Fest

Rheged Centre

“I need volunteers to man our FDG stand on both days ie Saturday & Sunday 3rd & 4th October. I’m quite looking forward to it. I’m currently planning an extremely flexible stand aimed at getting people to tie their first fly. So any volunteers will require to bring spare vices, tools, hooks & materials. I’m looking at either “one on one” or if we’re over subscribed “one on 2 to 4. I realise that this is extremely short notice but I’ve only received confirmation that it was happening last Thursday when I was in the middle of Grafham practicing for the John Watt & this was after 3 e-mails & a few phone calls.

I’m not trying for the same set up as we had at the CLA but if some one would like to set up a Bugs corner please feel free to do so. There will be some excellent Tyers at the Fly Fest & as far as I’m concerned they can deal with the more intricate nuances of fly tying where as we’ll aim at tying some lures & some simple flies that demonstrate basic techniques that will result in a punter leaving having joined up full of the will to win with their first fly in their pocket.

The Fly Fest is now in it’s 2nd year & is being set up to rival the BFFI. Any volunteers have free access to the show & hopefully will enjoy their time there.

Tight lines,

Dennis MacDonald (Chairman Pendle Branch FDG)”

Fly Dressers Guild Team Competition Winners!

It was the FDG team comp, and four of us from the fly fishing forum got a team together – Me, Richard, Wynne and Dave.
All from different parts of the country and all FDG members of course.
The idea was brought up by Richard and the team name ‘The Forumites’ was my idea, (not very inventive).
We had to tie three flies each mine was the Coachman, and send them as a team effort to FDG HQ (details in Autumn fly dresser mag).
This we did, but it was a close thing to get them there in time as Dave’s dad was taken ill and shortly after sadly died, but he came up with the flies just in time.
We all received a trophy and certificate, and also a goody bag from Veniards with lots of good useful items.
Details of the comp will be in the next mag, but here are the pics of the trophy and cert.

Best regards,

Jim O’Brien
